Raised on a Wisconsin dairy farm, Karen began her storytelling career spinning fantasies for her dog and creating plots while she mowed the huge country lawn. In her high school English class, the students were tasked with writing a novella, and when her teacher read portions of Karen’s work aloud and praised her talent, her passion for writing began to burn.
At 19, Karen moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where she worked for the Oak Ridge Boys, utilizing her writing skills to publish the fan newsletter and create short stories and poetry.
Over the years she has worked in entertainment and advertising offices, honing her writing skills by compiling employee handbooks and instructional manuals, press releases, newsletters, and general correspondence. She ran a successful secretarial/bookkeeping business for several years.
Upon her son’s graduation from high school, Karen was introduced to screenwriting and moved to Los Angeles, where she enrolled in writing courses at UCLA.
Karen served for several years as in-house editor for author Steve Allen, wrote screenplays for various production companies, including Nickelodeon, and ghost-wrote a travel book for the Auto Association of Great Britain. She worked with Dove Audio, Inc., abridging books for recording, and was an instructor for the American Film Institute’s scriptwriters’ program. She also wrote the official bio of Richard Pryor, which appears on his website.
Karen has earned the distinction of Advanced Toastmaster Bronze and Competent Leader in Toastmasters International and published an article in their magazine, The Toastmaster. She has published nine books, including a three-book romance series.
Now retired, Karen lives in Henderson, Nevada. Karen is proud to serve on the Board of the Foster Your Dream organization, whose mission is to help foster children feel special by arranging activities they might otherwise never experience.
